OnePlus Nord fails durability test; Plastic frame to blame
If you are buying the new OnePlus Nord, then it is highly recommended that you at least put on the clear soft case that comes out-of-the-box. You can, of course, invest in a hard case as the Nord is not the toughest of the phones out there. Having said that it doesn’t mean that the build quality of the device is bad. The OnePlus Nord feels sturdy but the plastic frame doesn’t inspire confidence. Not to forget, there’s Gorilla Glass 5 protection on both front and back but as pointed out in the durability test video of JerryRigEverything on YouTube, the plastic frame may break if sudden excessive force is applied. So, don’t put the Nord on the back pockets of your pants. Also, if you ride a two-wheeler, don’t put it inside the pockets of a tight denim. While the Gorilla Glass 5 may withstand the pressure, the plastic frame may not and this might let the display snap from inside. As for scratches during regular usage, OnePlus Nord comes with a good quality screen protector and you do not need to worry much. Interestingly, as pointed out in the video, the Nord comes with metal buttons but the entire frame is painted to appear like metal but it’s actually plastic. The optical fingerprint scanner does a good job and it works well despite scratches. Also, the device comes with slight water proofing for accidental splashes. The camera module can also sustain scratches and you need not worry about the protrusion. The OnePlus Nord doesn’t come with a headphone jack. There’s USB 2.0 Type-C connector and support for standard Type-C earphones.
