online fraud: Government has 4 tips to protect you from frauds on ‘its websites’
Online frauds are on the rise. Duping innocent citizens via fake websites is one of the most common ways used by the scamsters. Although these malicious apps look similar to the official government websites, there are certain checks that help ensure the legitimacy of the site and can prevent frauds. Cyber Dost, the safety and Cybersecurity awareness handle maintained by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India has shared some tips to help spot a malicious website. The tips were shared in an image posted by Cyber Dost on microblogging site Twitter. These are the four tips: Be careful about the name of a website. Malicious websites may look identical to a legitimate site, but the name may use a variation in spelling or a different domain (e.g., .com or .net etc.). In general, all government websites have [dot]gov[dot]in or [dot]nic[dot]in at the end of their names. For example, a malicious website may have name as www.npagov.in or www.npa-gov.in against the actual name www.npa.gov.in Here’s the link to the tweet by Cyber Dost Additionally, false logos and wrong/misspelled names are other common things that can help spot these fake websites. It is always advisable to apply extra precaution and common sense before transacting on any website.
